NatureTrack Foundation Honors Nancy Stearns’ Legacy with Scholarships for Two North County Students

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Quyen Ha and Scarlett Hernandez receive 2026 NatureTrack Nancy Stearns Scholarship to pursue futures in environmental science, biology, and conservation

BUELLTON, Calif. – June 29, 2026– NatureTrack Foundation has awarded the 2026 NatureTrack Nancy Stearns Scholarship to two outstanding North Santa Barbara County students: Quyen Ha, a graduate of Pioneer Valley High School, and Scarlett Hernandez, a graduate of Orcutt Academy Charter High School.

Created in memory of longtime NatureTrack docent Nancy Stearns, the scholarship honors Nancy’s love of nature, education, and service. Each recipient will receive a total award of $5,000, distributed over four years, to support their higher education in fields connected to science, conservation, environmental stewardship, and nature-based careers.

The scholarship is funded annually by Nancy’s husband, Brett Stearns, whose generosity continues to extend Nancy’s legacy by helping local students pursue meaningful careers connected to the natural world.

“Both Quyen and Scarlett exemplify the values this scholarship was created to encourage: curiosity, perseverance, service, and a deep respect for nature,” said Dennis Nord, NatureTrack Board Member and Chair of the Scholarship Committee. “We are honored to support them as they take the next steps toward careers that will help protect and better understand our natural world.”

Quyen Ha plans to study Environmental Science with the goal of becoming an environmental scientist. During high school, she pursued environmental research and conservation opportunities, including work related to endangered California tiger salamander recovery efforts alongside UCLA biologists and sustainable aviation research through the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science program at UC Irvine.

“Quyen’s academic accomplishments, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to environmental stewardship made her an exceptional candidate,” Nord said. “She has already demonstrated a remarkable dedication to understanding and solving environmental challenges.”

Scarlett Hernandez plans to study Biology and pursue a career as a wildlife ecologist. Raised by a single mother, Scarlett developed a deep connection to nature through hiking, camping, beach exploration, and volunteer service. Her experience as a camp counselor, science camp leader, and advocate for environmental education has shaped her desire to protect wildlife and natural habitats through research and conservation.

“Scarlett’s passion for nature shines through every aspect of her application,” Nord said. “Her volunteer service, love of the outdoors, and commitment to wildlife conservation reflect the very qualities this scholarship was created to support.”

The NatureTrack Nancy Stearns Scholarship supports graduating North Santa Barbara County students who demonstrate financial need, academic achievement, and a commitment to pursuing education in fields that align with NatureTrack’s mission of fostering a lifelong fascination with nature.

NatureTrack Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to Brett Stearns for his continued commitment to honoring Nancy’s legacy. Through this scholarship, Nancy’s love of nature, education, and mentorship continues to inspire future generations of students.
